Gollogly Family – Retail History
Retail has been in the Gollogly family name for over 60 years. Starting with a local corner shop, before moving being branded as a Henderson Group store (the old VG platform). The Keady SPAR store became part of the Henderson group in the 1990, which is where Frank began his retail career. Frank took on the Middletown store as his own in January 2016, and although he manages both stores he likes to keep them separate. Frank finds that both stores he manages are completely different, explaining how the Middletown store excels in the hot food and ice cream sales. Whereas the Keady store has a strong focus on fresh and grocery; particularly the drinks, snack and confectionery departments in respect of the latter. Interestingly the fresh food department in his Keady store has more than doubled within the last year.
With both stores thriving in their respective local communities, Frank explained the need for upgrading to the latest technologies in store. Upgrading to the newest Tempo handset was essential for the Keady store, with the introduction of fiber broadband, “it made perfect business sense to utilise the platform”. Cost and speed played a large factor in the decision to upgrade. Not only is it the latest efficient performing technology but in the long run we will see even more benefits with regard to being able to focus more on customer service and marketing.
Frank explains that the sales in the Middletown store are mainly from deals and promotions, with an abundance of promotional material advertised throughout the store. EDGEPoS allows the creation of deals that are store specific. “I believe we use the system differently for this particular aspect. We like to offer the local customers choice. Therefore instead of a promotion ending on a certain date, we like to run with the product until the item is sold out. This gives our customers a better selection of products. I have found our footfall has increased by about 20% since January 2016. The sales have also increased by 35%, which is a great success. The deals and promotions we focus on; I believe get our customers through the door. EDGEPoS definitely plays a part in the success, as we can successfully manage the deals and check on each items progress through the reporting system.”
