The Heaney family began their retail career over 24 years ago, with the popular store recently being passed onto the second family generation. The store itself has been subject to much change over the last 24 years. including a change of location in Sixmilecross to be opposite their family ran pub. Within recent years Aidan Heaney, (Son) has taken control of the popular store . Aidan starts explaining this SPAR success store by describing the strong connections the family have to the store. He explains how the Heaney family take the “Enjoy Local” SPAR ethos to the next level by raring the animals for butchery, providing meat for their deli counter, prepacked meat section and supplying even the local businesses with meat.
With the store ethos a “one stop shop” Aidan has made sure that he utilises the entire store to stock the newest ranges of merchandise for the local customers. The SPAR store has seen a number of new additions to the stores including; a post office, hot food counter, off sales and home bakery. It was July 2016 that the SPAR store saw the addition of EDGEPoS, and more recently their new tablet till.
EDGEPoS itself is extremely user friendly. The transition from our old system to EDGEPoS was very fast and easy. We have had an introduction of new staff recently, who have required little training thanks to EDGEPoS. There is a lot less manual input into the system, meaning less chance of human error; resulting inaccurate margins and stock levels. Reports are much clearer and easier to analyse, freeing up time which all contributes to profitability of the store. From the refit in July and the introduction of EDGEPoS we have seen a 20% increase in our sales.
Heaney’s SPAR, Sixmilecross is the first store in Northern Ireland to introduce the latest EDGEPoS technology; The Tablet till to their store. The Heaney family saw the new tablet till as a perfect opportunity to utilise space in their store. Aidan explains that as the tablet is so “neat and compact” it fits perfectly into their off sales department. Previous to the tablet till, the store had a temporary till that was transported between the off sales and grocery store meaning reporting was a “nightmare”. Aidan recalls the trouble with audit reports due to the previous till being unplugged numerous times throughout the year, leading to missing documents. However, Aidan explains with the tablet till permanently located in the off sales department combined with the efficiency of EDGEPoS reports this “will no longer be a cause for concern”.
Not only has the new tablet till rectified the issues of having a temporary till. It has allowed the Heaney family to utilise the space in store much more effectively. Aidan explains how the tablet till has allowed for a more streamlined counter in their grocery store. The tablet till has allowed Aidan to remove a till from the grocery section of the store, using the tablet till during busy periods. Thus allowing room to offer a wider selection of products to their customers. Additionally, with the new tablet till being small and compact, they were able to introduce a new drinks cabinet to their off sales department, increasing the products stocked, and essentially the sales to their store. Aidan details how the customers have noticed the space in store, with many believing that they had extended the store.
Henderson Technology are really good, they always resolve any issues or “how to” questions straight away. Training has been excellent, the girls really know the system inside out. We have had many staff introductions who have learned the system extremely quickly thanks to its user friendliness, saving time and money. Finally, everyone is always available to answer anything we have to ask.
