Scenario

We spoke to Alan Orr, Store Manager at Mulgrew’s Food Hall, recently opened in Carryduff, County Down. They opened in Spring 2023. With a store of approximately 6,000 square foot, they have emphasised fresh, friendly, fast, efficient service, alongside a modern deli and in-store butcher.   . The store boasts six tills – two are manned, and four unmanned, which are fully self service.

Future Proofing the Store from Day One

Alan says, “We installed the ESELs along with the EDGEPoS system in time to our store opening.  They are an absolute game changer. I have worked in retail for over 30 years, and the ESELs are the best innovation for retailers across the UK.  The amount of time and employee hours we save on price changes and promotions, coupled with the lack of customers querying prices and requesting refunds makes this product a must for me.  Prices are changed and promotions / deals are actioned at the touch of a button.  We couldn’t live without them now.  There is a great variation and of choice of the size of the labels, from small labels for beauty products to A4 for promotions and deals.”

Self Serve Experience

“When we say unmanned, the area still needs one employee manning the area.  Therefore, instead of having four employees serving, I have one employee manning all four self checkouts.  They provide great customer service, are there to help and assist; and educate our shoppers how to use the self serve tills.  If any issues arise with any customer transactions, they can fix it.  There are approximately 30% of all transactions now being processed through self-checkouts, which we are delighted with. We strategically placed the Self-Checkouts in the store, by encouraging the flow of people to come around to the SCOs, they pass more impulse goods, and we try to upsell to them.”

Integrating Glory with Self-Checkout

“This is my first experience in 30 years of retail of card and cash Self-Checkouts.  They are both fantastic! I would advise any retailer who is thinking of installing Self-Checkout to go to a shop and see it.  With the Glory integration, there’s no complication of a customer stating that they received the wrong change.  In our three months of trading, we have had no major issues at all.

In terms of the back office closed loop Glory solution, the system controls all the money. We no longer have to count floats, which saves time. So, if we finish at 10.45pm, we’re out at that time, it saves time that way, and keeps the staff happier, which is fantastic!”
