“We knew from the start that EDGEPoS was
the system we wanted—it’s user-friendly,
transparent, and just makes sense for a busy
retail environment like ours. It is much more
than a till system. The support has been
brilliant, and the difference it’s made to both
our stores has been huge. We’ve saved time,
reduced errors, and our stores look and feel
more modern. The team has more time, the
customers are happier, and everything just
runs smoother. We honestly wouldn’t go back.”

Family Stores
Clerkenleap forecourt & Evesham Store: A Retail Transformation with EDGEPoS
Clerkenleap Garage, based on the A38 on the outskirts of Worcester, has been a trusted part of its local community for over 22 years. Operating alongside it is the family’s standalone convenience store in Evesham, which has served its neighbourhood for the past seven. Owned and run by a family deeply rooted in forecourt retailing since 1998, both stores benefit from years of hands-on experience and generational insight. After working with major fuel retailers such as BP and Esso, the current generation returned to their family business over a decade ago, bringing back valuable industry knowledge and a modernised retail approach.
Clerkenleap is a high-volume forecourt, attracting both transient traffic and loyal locals. The store sees over 30,000 transactions weekly and sells more than 150,000 litres of fuel. It also includes a Post Office and services HGV traffic, making it a hub for a diverse customer base. Evesham, their second site, sits within a housing estate and typically serves an older, pedestrian demographic. Despite being only 1,500 sq ft in size, Evesham consistently delivers weekly sales of over £30,000 and is an essential part of its local community.
Operational Challenges with the Previous EPOS System
Although both stores were well established, their previous EPOS system was not keeping up with the demands of a modern retail environment. While the system looked polished, it lacked essential functionality, making daily tasks like reporting, pricing, and promotion management unnecessarily complex. Limited support also left staff without the assistance they needed, ultimately slowing down operations and increasing the chance of costly errors.
Making the Switch to EDGEPoS
After being approached by Henderson Technology several years earlier, the team was
interested in adopting EDGEPoS but had to wait until Nectar integration was approved to suit their Esso forecourt. As soon as this approval was granted, the transition began. Clerkenleap went live with EDGEPoS in February 2024, and the Evesham store followed in June. So confident were the team in the new system that they chose to pay out of their existing EPOS contract early to access the benefits sooner.
Gaining Control Through Transparency and Reporting
One of the biggest improvements brought by EDGEPoS has been visibility and transparency. The back office system allows for instant access to real-time data, including margin performance, top and bottom sellers, and cash control. These insights help managers make more informed decisions, streamline operations, and focus on areas that drive profitability. Daily tasks that previously consumed hours— such as applying price changes with paper labels or running margin reports—are now completed efficiently with just a few clicks.
Time-Saving Benefits of ESELs
The introduction of Electronic Shelf Edge Labels (ESELs) has delivered substantial labour savings. Promotional changes, once an all-day task, now take as little as three hours. Managers report saving between four to six hours each week, and pricing errors at the tills have been dramatically reduced. The accuracy and clarity of ESELs also help customers quickly identify offers, leading to a smoother shopping experience with fewer disputes at the point of sale.
A Modern Look Without a Full Refit
The visual impact of EDGEPoS hasn’t gone unnoticed. Customers have commented that the stores look as though they’ve had a full refit, thanks to the digital transformation brought by ESELs and improved till screens. With bold black label strips and clear pricing, offers stand out far more effectively than traditional paper labels, which previously blended into the background.
Hybrid Self-Checkouts That Actually Work
The Evesham store has also successfully introduced hybrid self-checkouts. While customers were initially hesitant—due to poor experiences with a previous provider— they’ve quickly come to appreciate the speed and simplicity of the new system. Staff have been instrumental in encouraging adoption, guiding regulars through the process and reinforcing confidence. Now, customers using smaller baskets are choosing self-service by default, reducing queue times and allowing staff to focus on other operational tasks.
Freeing Up Staff Time and Boosting Productivity
With EDGEPoS, staff are now able to multitask more effectively. Team members can assist customers on the floor while managing stock or the Post Office counter, reducing downtime without compromising service quality. The flexibility of the hybrid tills has allowed for more efficient team deployment and better use of in-store resources during peak hours.
Maximising In-Store Marketing with Digital Screens
Clerkenleap has taken full advantage of customer-facing till screens to promote their services. These displays are used for marketing meal deals, job vacancies, and community sponsorships. Notably, the team has received direct job applications from customers who saw the ads in-store. The stores also use these screens to showcase their sponsorship of local women’s and junior football teams, reinforcing their connection to the community and driving awareness of their local support efforts.
Supportive Development
Michelle mentioned how the team at EDGEPoS are always willing to support business growth. If there is something a retailer feels would meet their daily operations, EDGEPoS encourages development requests and works to accommodate them. She was pleasantly surprised at how quickly one of her own requests was accepted and implemented.
A Complete Retail Upgrade
The adoption of EDGEPoS has revolutionised operations at both Clerkenleap and Evesham. From improved reporting and pricing accuracy to faster transactions and a modernised in-store feel, the system has helped the business become more efficient, customer-focused, and future-ready. Staff morale is higher, customers are more satisfied, and the management team is better equipped to make smart business decisions.
