“EDGEPoS and ESELs have given us total control of our store. From better reporting and pricing accuracy to saving 10 hours a week on manual tasks — it’s been transformative. I finally feel like I’m running the business, not the other way around.”
Veer Patel, Store Director, SPAR Nash’s Jaywick
SPAR Nash’s Jaywick – A Small Store with Big Visions
Tucked away in a vibrant coastal town, SPAR Nash’s Jaywick is a compact but community-focused store that’s been trading for over 30 years. At just 1,250 sq ft, it is now led by Veer Patel, a third-generation retailer determined to combine family tradition with forward-thinking retail. “My grandad started us in retail, then my parents took over, and now I’m leading the store. We’ve been through a lot of changes, but this is the most positive shift yet,” says Veer. “Although I now run the day-to-day operations, my parents are still very much involved in the business and continue to play an active role — it’s still a
real family effort.”
In 2024, Veer invested in Henderson Technology’s EDGEPoS system and Electronic Shelf Edge Labels (ESELs) — proving that even the smallest of stores can benefit massively from advanced retail technology.
Before implementing EDGEPoS, SPAR Nash’s Jaywick had limited visibility into performance or profitability. Veer said he often made decisions without real data to support them, relying on guesswork rather than facts. This was especially frustrating when trying to identify which areas of the store were profitable and which weren’t. “I didn’t know our gross profit. I didn’t know what was selling well and what wasn’t, ” he explains. Older systems simply didn’t offer the live reporting, supplier integration, or margin tracking that he needed to operate confidently in a competitive retail environment.
With EDGEPoS now in place, Veer has regained control of the store’s performance. He checks reports daily, tracking gross profit margins, category performance, and product trends in real time. He’s also learned to schedule price increases on selected items, helping to protect profitability when wholesale RRPs drop. “I cut a Red Bull flavour last week because I’d ordered 20 cases and sold 5. That’s money sitting on the shelf. EDGEPoS helped me make that call,
” he says. These insights — previously only available to larger supermarkets with bigger systems — are now fully accessible to a small store like SPAR Nash’s Jaywick. And for Veer, that’s exactly the point: the system is made for everyone, not just big retailers.
At the same time as EDGEPoS, Veer also introduced Electronic Shelf Edge Labels. The time savings were immediate. Previously, his staff would spend hours printing, checking and replacing paper price labels — sometimes giving up midway through. “We used to get 10 pages of price changes daily — that’s over 200 products. Now it’s automatic. You press a button, and it’s done, ” he explains.
Veer estimates the store now saves 10 hours of staff time per week. That time has been reallocated to more valuable tasks like visual merchandising and customer service, helping to improve the store’s presentation and overall experience for shoppers.
For Veer, one of the most important things to highlight is that SPAR Nash’s Jaywick is
not a large store — and precisely the technology works so well. “We’ve got 3,000 SKUs in a small footprint. EDGEPoS handles it all. It doesn’t matter if you’re a big supermarket or a small high street shop — this system works, ” he says. He says the system has significantly improved staff efficiency, pricing accuracy, and overall confidence in running the business.
“I know what I’m earning now. I didn’t before.”
Thanks to the reliability and visibility provided by EDGEPoS, Veer says he finally feels
comfortable stepping away from the shop — something he never would’ve considered in the past. “I used to panic if I wasn’t there for a day. Now I’ve been away for a week and didn’t worry once. I know the system is working, and if something does go wrong, support is always available.” He’s also reassured by the fact that Henderson Technology offers emergency support services out of hours, giving him even more confidence in the system.
At just 25 years old, Veer is part of a new generation of independent retailers — and he believes that embracing digital tools is the way forward. His message to other smaller stores is clear: don’t assume this technology is only for big players.
“This isn’t just for big stores. I’ve got 3,000 SKUs in 1,250 square feet, and it works brilliantly. If I open another shop, it’ll get EDGEPoS and ESELs from day one.” He also acknowledges that older retailers may be hesitant to invest in digital systems — but encourages them to talk to younger store owners to hear how the benefits far outweigh the costs.
“You’re not just paying for tech — you’re buying time, insight and peace of mind. That’s worth every penny.”
A Confident Store with a Clear Vision
SPAR Nash’s Jaywick has shown that innovation isn’t just for chains and supermarkets. Under Veer Patel’s leadership, this small community store has embraced EDGEPoS and ESELs to streamline operations, empower staff, and improve the overall customer experience — all without losing the local, personal touch that defines its success.
“We’re not just investing in software — we’re investing in the future of our business, our team, and the community we serve every day.”
