Results: New customers, increased sales, Home Delivery and Click n Collect offering instore
The Quinn family own and run two SPAR stores in Cookstown, County Tyrone, both circa 3,000 square foot. The Church Street store has a popular Hot Food and Deli, whilst the Westland Road store has no hot food, but does have an off-sales and strong grocery offering.
In 2017, the business noticed that queues at breakfast and lunch were becoming excessive, with customers starting to leave, rather than wait in line. Drive-pasts were also increasing as a result of the car park being crowded, due to long customer dwell times.
Church Street SPAR launched SPAR NI App (now known as Appetite) in September 2017.
To date they have over 2,300 registered users for this store alone – IOS 80%; Android 20%
They receive an average of 40 transactions per day through the App, with the majority of orders being received on a Thursday and Friday. The average basket spend in this store is £3.00.

Revenues: Deli sales increased by an average of £700 per week (£100 per day).
Summary: For this site, ‘Workplace Delivery’ is the most successful service. There is a significant opportunity to increase revenues from local businesses, and the feeling is that opportunity has not been maximised to it’s full potential. We look forward to hear how Quinn’s get on this in this store once the community are back to work after the COVID pandemic.
Frank Kilpatrick told us, “With the large number of registered users in this store, we feel it is an opportunity to communicate and reach these customers through push notifications. We will be using the data on the App to market out offers and real time deals to our customers once they are back in the workplace.”
Westland Road has a completely different customer database to Church Street SPAR. Frank told us, “We introduced Appetite in April 2020, shortly after the initial national lockdown. The service was introduced to offer a ‘community service’ during the COVID-19 lockdown. The initial offering had no delivery charge in line with the mood of the local community at the time. We have no Hot Food offering in this store, but did include our off sales offerings for home delivery also.”
“Our home deliveries quickly grew, with a peak in May 2020 of £21,101. Our delivery service is available from 10am to 10pm Monday – Sunday, and we do find that the majority of our orders are placed for same day delivery.”
The average basket in this store is £54.00, but the Appetite orders range from £30.00 to £250.00 per transaction. 85% of orders received are home delivery versus 15% click n collect, with Friday and Saturday being the busiest in App order days in Westland Road.
Frank has also commented on the significant increase in the amount of Fresh and Produce being ordered through the App, particularly on same day deliveries.
Impressively, between May 2020 and January 2021 to date, Westland Road Appetite orders have now reached a value of over £120,000. Amazing!
The implementation of the App in both stores has been a huge success. It is a single success story of two stores who use the multi functional Appetite App in two completely different ways, but have seen the returns first hand across their Foot to Go offering, and their grocery and alcohol sales. The stores advise that approximately 90% of App customers are new customers. having never previously used the stores. This makes the sales through the App truly incremental.
